Januray 15 Taking a cue form the growing popularity of foreign satellite channels such as Zee and Star Plus, which have eroded local TV's viewership in the cities, Pakistan Television has also decided to turn to the dish. The right to life redefined

"The word life has not been defined in the Constitution but it does not mean nor can it be restricted only to the vegetative or animal life or mere existence from conception to death," reads the Supreme Court judgement on Shehla Zia vs. WAPDA, a public interest litigation. The judgment sets out two important precedents. Firstly, it expands the meaning the life as contained in the Article 9 of the Constitution to include "all such amenities and facilities which a person in a free country is entitled to enjoy with dignity, legally and constitutionally." Secondly, it establishes the principle that a hazard to such rights can be prevented through precautionary action.

In Karachi, despite exceptions such as Tehrik-I-Niswan, Baang and Dastak, stage shows featuring Omar Sharif and other low-brow acts attract huge audiences. Meanwhile Theatrewalay, Sohail Malik and Gripps attempt to tread the middle way.
